Heliopolis, a neutral space colony, houses a secret weapons research facility producing Gundams for the Earth Alliance. ZAFT, an organization of genetically modified humans, attacks Heliopolis, stealing four of the five Gundams. Kira Yamato, a civilian caught in the crossfire, pilots the remaining Gundam, the Strike. He encounters his best friend, Athrun Zala, who has joined ZAFT and is piloting one of the stolen Gundams. Despite being Coordinators themselves, Kira and Athrun find themselves on opposing sides of the conflict. Kira fights for the Alliance to protect his friends, while Athrun fights for ZAFT. Their friendship is strained as they battle each other in a war fueled by individual beliefs.
