Based on the comic book by Frank Miller and Geof Darrow, the BGY-11 robot, known as Big Guy, is created to defend America. Unbeknownst to the public, Big Guy is just a man in a suit, as efforts to develop a fully functional robot have failed. After years of serving as a celebrated protector, he is decommissioned when Rusty, a childlike combat robot with advanced artificial intelligence, is introduced. However, Rusty's lack of experience leads to his defeat during his first mission. Consequently, Big Guy is recalled to action to mentor Rusty, teaching him the ropes of being a hero. In the process, Big Guy discovers important lessons that only a child can impart.
