An intergalactic conflict erupted at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Since humanity had to leave the planet due to significant ecological destruction, the Star Calendar will be used to record human history beginning in the year 0000. Things that "disturb the heart," such as music and art, are prohibited in certain planets of this new society ruled by a totalitarian government known as the Deep Galactic Trade Organization. Later, the intergalactic troupe AKB0048, which is made up of ladies who continue the name and spirit of the original members, revives the legendary idol group AKB48. The idol group is unable to stage official concerts since the government considers their presence to be illegal. AKB0048 also switched from the "idols you can meet" approach to the "idols who see fans" concept. They take up arms to bring their music to their followers wherever they are, and are viewed as heroes by some and terrorists by others. As they prepare to become the AKB0048's newest members, a group of young hopefuls are followed throughout the story.
