The "Death Note," a strange black notebook that can kill anyone as long as the owner knows both the target's name and face, is discovered by unhappy high school student Light Yagami in Tokyo. Light kills high-profile Japanese criminals first because he is initially afraid of the Death Note's god-like power, but he turns his attention to targeting worldwide criminals after thinking about the Death Note's potential. Light receives a visit from Ryuk, a "shinigami" and the Death Note's previous owner, five days after finding the notebook. Invisible to those who have not touched the notebook, Ryuk admits that he dumped it into the world of humans out of boredom and finds Light's actions amusing.
