The middle-school students Miaka Yuki and Yui Hongo's various struggles are chronicled in the series. One day Miaka and Yui are browsing the library when they come across a peculiar book called The Universe of the Four Gods. They enter the ancient Chinese world of the novel as they read it. Yui is transported back to the real world almost immediately, but Miaka finds herself the Priestess of Suzaku. The seven Celestial Warriors of the god Suzaku must be gathered by Miaka in order to call Suzaku and grant him three wishes. She ultimately receives a response from the Celestial Warrior Tamahome, and Miaka's initial motivation to use a wish to get into the high school of her choosing starts to change in favor of finding a method to be with Tamahome. When Yui tries to assist Miaka in returning to the real world, she is sucked into the story as well. She ends up becoming the Priestess of Seiryuu and working against Miaka out of jealousy over Tamahome and retaliation for the humiliation and suffering she endured when she first entered the world of the book.
