In the imaginary European nation of Gosick, which spans from Switzerland to the Alps between France and Italy to the Mediterranean Sea, the year is 1924. The nation is referred to as "Sauville" in the light novels, while the capital of Sauville in the anime adaptation is "Saubureme." The plot revolves around Kazuya Kujo, a transfer student to St. Marguerite Academy where urban legends and horror stories are common. Kazuya is the third son of a senior commander in the Imperial Japanese Army. Victorique de Blois, a mysterious but attractive and intelligent girl who never attends class and spends her days reading the entire library's collection or solving riddles that even detectives are unable to solve, is a character he encounters there. The early episodes largely center on Kazuya and Victorique becoming embroiled in various crime cases and their battle to solve them while also developing significant relationships with other people and one another. The tenebrous heritage of Victorique and her family, however, comes back to haunt her as the series goes on.
