Japanese high school freshman Yukino Miyazawa is enviously admired by her peers for her stellar performance and impeccable appearance. Her "perfect" outward appearance, though, is a deception that she maintains to gain admiration. She is spoiled, unyielding, a mess, and studies obstinately and compulsively in her home to keep up her grades. Soichiro Arima, a lovely young man whose very existence Yukino feels a threat to the adulation on which she thrives, knocks her from her place at the top of the class when she first enters high school. She then makes a vow to kill him. When Soichiro admits to having feelings for her, Yukino rejects him before bragging about it at home. When her perceptive younger sister Kano points out that her enmity toward him stems from admiration, she is forced to reconsider her own emotions.
