Student Hotaro Oreki joins Kamiyama High School's Classic Literature Club to prevent its dissolution at his older sister's request. He is accompanied by club members Eru Chitanda, Satoshi Fukube, and Mayaka Ibara. The novel takes place in Kamiyama City, a made-up location in the Gifu Prefecture that was inspired by the author's actual hometown of Takayama, also in the Gifu region. The actual Hida High School served as the inspiration for the fictional Kamiyama High School. They start working on numerous riddles for their group and Eru's requests.
