Kai Ichinose, a young man who spends his days in the red light district but sneaks away at night to play the piano in the forest, is the protagonist of the story Forest of Piano. Kai's kindergartener Shuhei Amamiya transfers to Kai's primary school, Moriwaki Elementary, where he is the son of a concert pianist. However, it doesn't take long for Shuhei to become the target of the bullies in his class. He then participates in a dare to play the mysterious piano in the forest, which brings him into contact with Kai, who appears to be the only one capable of producing sound from the piano, which is believed to be broken. Shuhei and Sosuke Ajino, Kai's music instructor and former master pianist, both admire him for his talent. Although Kai is initially receptive to improving his piano-playing technique, Shuhei and Ajino both try to persuade him to enroll in formal piano lessons. He finally gives in after hearing Sosuke perform a Chopin piece he is unable to play himself.
