The Japanese National Police Agency secretly creates an armed division named Minkei or Private Police in the near future to put an end to the widespread use of weapons in criminal and terrorist acts by heavily armed offenders. Due to the fact that Minkei bases its hiring practices primarily on aptitude, it is willing to hire anyone who demonstrates the necessary aptitude for the job. Kou, Mikuru, Kina (dead), Fujita, Hana, and Shikie are members of the Light Knight B squad, and Zero In covers their interactions and situations. Kou and Mikuru, the two primary protagonists, are the subject of the most of the plot, with various chapters focusing more intently on their partners. A major plot point centers on Mikuru's relationships, both inside and outside of Minkei, as well as the emotional rollercoaster that is her burgeoning romance with Kou, how she manages her existence in the two very different worlds of a high school idol and a Minkei officer, and her intense physical rivalry with the more senior Shikie.
