The first scene of Samurai Champloo takes place in a town where Fuu, a tea waitress, is assaulted by the son of the town's dishonest prefect. When the bandit Mugen enters the city, Fuu begs him for protection, which he agrees to provide in exchange for food. The ronin Jin, who is also a recent newcomer, murders the prefect's bodyguards when they mistreat a peasant. Mugen then confronts Jin after mistaking him for one of the prefect's men. The teahouse is destroyed as a result of the two's fight. Fuu rescues the duo when they are captured and given the death penalty. When the two try to resume their fight, Fuu flips a coin and says that if it lands on heads, they can fight again, but if it lands on tails, they must wait until she finds the warrior she has been looking for for years. They go out on a series of adventures accompanying Fuu's quest once she wins the toss.
