The story takes place in a small, tranquil Japanese village called Sotoba during a particularly scorching summer in 1994. At the same time as a peculiar family comes into the long-vacant Kanemasa mansion on top of a hill, a string of unexplained fatalities start to spread around the village. Young Megumi Shimizu pays them a visit, vowing never to return. She was a rural girl who yearned to move to the city. Later, she is discovered dead and lying in the jungle. The director of Sotoba's lone hospital, Doctor Toshio Ozaki, initially believes there is an outbreak; but, as the deaths mount and the inquiries continue, he learns—and is eventually convinced—that they are the work of the "shiki," vampire-like creatures terrorizing the community. Young Natsuno Yuuki, who despises living in the village, starts to be chased and is eventually encircled by death.
