The narrative centers on Yugi Muto, a little kid who solved the Millennium Puzzle, an ancient Egyptian relic, and as a result received an alter-ego soul. After defeating Seto Kaiba in a game of Duel Monsters, Maximillion Pegasus, the game's creator, approaches Yugi and kidnaps his grandfather's soul with the power of another Millennium Item, the Millennium Eye. Yugi enters Pegasus' Duelist Kingdom competition with the assistance of his friends Joey Wheeler (Katsuya Jonouchi), Tristan Taylor (Hiroto Honda), and Téa Gardner (Anzu Mazaki) in an effort to defeat Pegasus and liberate his grandfather's spirit.
