Corneil is a brilliant canine who can read and write in perfect English, far surpassing most humans in intelligence. Aware that life as a spoiled pet is preferable, he does everything possible to keep his extraordinary abilities hidden from his owners, John and Beth. However, their plans unravel when they hire the bumbling Bernie Barges to "dog-sit," and Bernie discovers Corneil's secret. Despite their frequent disagreements, an uneasy friendship develops between them, prompting Corneil to use his wits to help Bernie out of various predicaments. The plot mainly revolves around Corneil's determination to conceal his intelligence and ability to communicate with humans, known only to Bernie, whose Uncle Rico looks after John and Beth's apartment. Unfortunately, Bernie accidentally learns that Corneil can talk and, being morally questionable and illiterate, often exploits this knowledge. This creates awkward situations as Bernie pretends to be Corneil, disregarding his instructions while taking advantage of Corneil's reluctance to engage.
