The Simpson family, who reside in Springfield, a fictitious "Middle America" town, are the major protagonists. The father, Homer, has a job as a safety inspector at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant, which contrasts with his irresponsible, buffoonish nature. Marge Bouvier, a prototypical American mother and homemaker, is his wife. They have three kids: Bart, a ten-year-old troublemaker and joker; Lisa, an activist who is eight; and Maggie, a newborn who rarely speaks but uses pacifiers to communicate. Even though the family is dysfunctional, many episodes focus on their links and relationships, and it is frequently demonstrated that they care for one another. Homer made his father, Grampa Simpson, sell his home so that his family could purchase one, and now he resides in the Springfield Retirement Home. In a few of the episodes, Grampa Simpson has had leading parts.
