Astro Boy 1963
Tobio Tenma, the sole son of Dr. Tenma, a scientist with the Ministry of Science's Department of Precision Machinery, is killed in an automobile accident. He requests the creation of a "super-robotic" in Tobio's likeness out of grief. The robotic is the most complex thing anyone has ever seen, but the creator is unhappy with it because it doesn't grow, so in a fit of fury he sells it to the circus. After this, he is fired from his position at the Ministry of Science and shows up extremely rarely. He has a complex relationship with robots, mostly believing that they should be handled as slaves rather than as people. They are made to fight in gladiator-style competitions in the circus, where robotics are present but far more simply constructed than Tobio. Atom, however, wants to live in harmony. He eventually meets Professor Ochanomizu, who succeeded Dr. Tenma as the head of the Ministry of Science. Ochanomizu is viewed quite differently from Tenma, and the robots look up to him as a savior since he shows them care and affection that Tenma did not. He frees Atom from the circus and takes on the role of a father figure for him after realizing how advanced Atom is compared to the other robotics.
