Hikaru Shindo discovers a Go board that is possessed by the ghost of Fujiwara-no-Sai, a Heian-era Go player, while exploring his grandfather's shed. Sai longs to play Go once more after being unable to do so since the late Edo period, when the eminent Go player Honinbo Shusaku saw his ghost. Sai's ultimate goal is to master the perfect move known as the Kami no Itte (, "Divine Move"). Sai lives in Hikaru's head as a separate personality and coexists with the young child, albeit not always amicably, in a portion of the kid's mind because it appears to be the only person who can perceive him.
