Utena Tenjou received a signet ring with roses etched on it from a wandering prince after the passing of her parents. The prince assured Utena that they will someday cross paths again, and because of his noble character, Utena made the decision to someday become a prince as well. Years later, Utena enrolls as a student at Ohtori Academy after being sent there by her hunt for the prince. She is forced to participate in a dueling match against the Student Council of the school, all of whose members sport signet rings that are the same as Utena's. The winner of the duel gets Anthy Himemiya, the "Rose Bride," who is a mystery woman with the "potential to alter the world," engaged. After having to defend her status as the fiancée of the Rose Bride after winning, Utena resolves to continue the competition in order to defend Anthy from the other duelists. As Utena and Anthy become more intimate, Utena discovers that Anthy is related to "End of the World," the enigmatic person who arranges the duel.
