The planet has been defended from "Aratama," odd and evil monsters intent on eradicating humanity, by an elite organization of shrine maidens known as "Toji" throughout history. These warriors are currently part of a specialized police unit tasked with eradicating Aratama. In order to teach young females the sword fighting skills they need to defeat these monsters and eventually join their fellow Toji in defending the globe, the government has also established five top schools throughout the nation. Kanami Etou, a student at one of the five institutions, is selected to represent Minoseki Academy in a sword-fighting contest where she encounters the enigmatic Hiyori Juujou. Even though Kanami and Hiyori win the competition, their conflict has an unexpected twist that causes chaos in the Toji universe. The two are forced to leave the competition and conflict with erstwhile allies along the way, raising the possibility that the Toji are dealing with internal treason.
