The television show centers on the lives of British youngster Mark Hollander, who immigrated to Conestoga Hills, New York, with his parents. One rainy night, Mark plays his favorite video game, the made-up Ace Lightning and the Carnival of Doom, a superhero-based adventure game where Ace Lightning battles his arch-enemy Lord Fear while navigating the Carnival of Doom to discover the parts of the magical Amulet of Zoar. Mark accidentally discovers a secret seventh level that is not supposed to exist. When a lightning bolt strikes the antenna on his roof, an electrical surge causes the video game characters to come to life. Ace employs Mark as his sidekick to carry out the game's goals in reality. Because of how his work as a Lightning Knight affects his social life and academic performance, Mark's life is flipped upside down, and he frequently has to give his family and friends an explanation. Meanwhile, the town's dilapidated Kent Bros. Carnival is occupied by Lord Fear's band of villains.
