The 12-year-old cat Gumball Watterson and his frequent antics in the made-up American city of Elmore, together with his adopted goldfish brother and closest buddy Darwin, are the focus of the animated series. Gumball's other family members, smart sister Anais, homebody father Richard, and workaholic mother Nicole, all of whom are rabbits, frequently become embroiled in his antics. Gumball attends Elmore Junior High alongside his siblings, where he meets with a variety of middle school students, most notably Penny Fitzgerald, the love interest of the series. Since the third season, "The Void," a dimension inside of Elmore where all the universe's errors are located, has been a recurring theme in the series. This covers both in-series elements and references to elements of reality. A supporting character from the first two seasons named Rob became stuck in The Void after losing his or her importance. He later makes it out in season 3, following which he turns as Gumball's biggest enemy. In the season 4 episode "The Disaster," it is revealed that he is aware of his fictional existence and that his animosity toward Gumball stems from his position as the main character.
