Ichigo Kurosaki, a boy from Karakura Town, has the ability to see ghosts, which allows him to meet Rukia Kuchiki, a supernatural trespasser who comes to the area in pursuit of a Hollow, a terrible lost soul with the power to hurt both ghosts and humans. Rukia is a member of the Soul Reapers, warriors tasked with escorting the souls of the deceased from the World of the Living to the afterlife realm from where she originated, also known as the "Dead Spirit World". Rukia transfers her powers to Ichigo when she is critically hurt protecting Ichigo from a Hollow she is pursuing and allows him to fight in her place while she regains her strength. As a result, Rukia is imprisoned in a regular human body and must guide Ichigo as he manages the responsibilities of his role as a stand-in Soul Reaper while also attending high school. The two join forces with three more spiritually empowered companions to hunt the Hollows.
