Chihaya Ayase, a tomboyish kid with a strong sense of self, grows up in the shadow of her older sister. She has no personal goals and is happy with her lot in life up until she meets Arata Wataya. She is introduced to competitive karuta, a psychologically and physically challenging card game that was inspired by the traditional Japanese anthology Hundred Poets, by the quiet transfer student in her elementary school class. Chihaya is drawn into the world of karuta by Arata's enthusiasm for the game and motivated by the chance of becoming the best in Japan. She joins the neighborhood Shiranami Society with the prodigy Arata and her snobbish but dedicated buddy Taichi Mashima. The group played together during their happy childhood days till something happened to separate them. Chihaya, who is now in high school, has developed into a karuta freak. She hopes to start the Municipal Mizusawa High Competitive Karuta Club and compete in the national championship in Omi Jingu. Reunited with the now uninterested Taichi, Chihaya is just one step away from realizing her ambition of founding a karuta squad. To do so, she needs to gather players who share her enthusiasm for the sport.
