Izumi Shinichi, 17, resides with his mother and father in a peaceful area in Tokyo. One night, worm-like aliens known as Parasytes invade Earth and enter through human hosts' ears or nostrils to take over their brains. One Parasyte tries to enter Shinichi's body through his ear while he sleeps, but is unable to due to the headphones he is wearing. Migi instead enters through his arm and takes control of his right hand. Both Migi and Shinichi still have their distinct personalities and intellects since Shinichi was able to stop Migi from moving further higher up into his brain. The two take advantage of their peculiar circumstance when they come across more Parasytes, growing closer as they cooperate to survive. They have an advantage over other Parasytes because they are more likely to attack them when they realize Shinichi's human brain is still intact. While seeking Migi's assistance, Shinichi feels impelled to battle other Parasytes that use humans as nourishment.
