Kakeru, a former high school running champion, is sought after for food theft. He is rescued by Haiji, a runner and student at Kansei University. Kakeru is persuaded to move into the former dorm "Chikusei-so" by Haiji, where he intends to join forces with other inhabitants to compete in the Hakone Ekiden relay marathon, one of the most prestigious university competitions in Japan. Kakeru quickly learns that every single resident—aside from Haiji and himself—is an absolute beginner.
