Delinquent Hanamichi Sakuragi is the boss of a gang. Sakuragi has been rejected an incredible fifty times, which makes him incredibly disliked with girls. He meets the lady of his dreams, Haruko Akagi, in his first year at Shohoku High School, and is ecstatic to discover that she does not find him repulsive or frightening like all the other girls he has asked out. Haruko introduces Sakuragi to the Shohoku basketball squad after noticing his athleticism. Because Sakuragi has never played sports before and believes basketball is a game for losers because his fiftieth rejection was in favor of a basketball player, he is first hesitant to join the team. He joins the team, primarily in the hopes of impressing and becoming closer to Haruko, despite his great immaturity and volatile temper, and he quickly demonstrates that he is a natural athlete.
