Before he realizes it, Kirito has plunged headfirst into a grand, fantastical virtual world. He just has a vague recall of what occurred just before he logged in, so he begins to saunter around looking for hints. He finds a boy inside a massive, completely dark tree (the Gigas Cedar). "Eugeo is my name. Kirito, nice to meet you." The youngster exhibits the same range of emotions as any human person, despite the fact that he is allegedly an NPC who lives in the virtual world. Kirito continues to look for a means to get out of this realm even as he develops a bond with Eugeo. In the meantime, he is reminded of a certain memory deep inside. He recalls as a youngster racing Eugeo across the mountains. He shouldn't have had that memory in the first place. And in this memory, he sees a young blond girl instead of Eugeo. She goes by Alice. Furthermore, it's a name that should never be forgotten.
