The Heike Story

Japan is ruled by the Taira clan, sometimes referred to as the Heike. A little girl who has an unusual eye that gives her the ability to predict the future disrespects the clan, and her father pays the price for her crime with his life. As luck would have it, not long after, the same poor girl—who has since changed her name to "Biwa"—is discovered by Taira no Shigemori, the clan chief's eldest son. He is told by Biwa that the Heike is about to fall. Shigemori makes a commitment to care for Biwa rather than allowing her to perish after learning of the severe injustice she endured at the hands of Heike. The Heike are engaged in a crafty power struggle at a time when military tension is increasing, and a bloody conflict is imminent. Shigemori, whose eyes enable him to see the ghosts of the dead, is both concerned about and optimistic about saving his kin. In this crucial period of Japanese history, Biwa is unwilling to share the future with him and must adjust to her new existence, which is both happy and sad.
