Tennis prodigy Ryouma Echizen has returned from America at his father's request and is prepared to dominate the Japanese tennis scene. He enrolls in Seishun Academy, which has one of the top middle school tennis teams in Japan, with the goal of becoming the best tennis player in the nation. Ryouma, a freshman, finds himself competing for a spot on the starting lineup in the intra-school ranking matches after catching the captain's attention. The other members of the Seishun Boys' Tennis Team are initially hesitant to accept him because of his age, but his talent and tenacity persuade them. Seishun sets out to win a place in the National Tournament with their new "super rookie," seeking to win the coveted crown for themselves. The squad must first qualify by competing in the Kanto and Tokyo Prefectural Regionals. However, a variety of powerful schools, each playing tennis in a distinctive fashion for their own reasons, share the route in front of them. If Ryouma and his comrades want to achieve their goals of becoming champions, they must learn how to work together.
