Amano Keita, a fifth grader, chooses to buy a toy after spotting a strange capsule toy machine in the woods while out and about one day. But when he opens the capsule he is given, Whisper, a ghostly creature, appears. He chooses to offer Keita the Youkai Watch because he is impressed that Keita did not flee or barrage him with inquiries. The watch is a tool that enables the owner to view youkai, fanciful creatures that are generally invisible to humans and have various types of magical abilities. The Youkai Watch also gives the wearer the ability to call any youkai he has made friends with and employ that youkai's abilities. Keita and Whisper use it to deal with the trouble-making youkai they encounter across the city while also making friends with many of them.
