Arata Kangatari
Arata Hinohara from present-day Japan switches places with Arata from the alternate world of Amawakuni (). The transition is concealed by an illusion, so Hinohara and Arata appear to be one person to those in both realms. Arata, the only witness, was falsely accused by Kannagi, a holder of the rare sword spirits known as Hayagami (), who joined eleven other wielders against their queen Princess Kikuri. Arata is found guilty by the Imperial Court and banished to Gatoya Island, but owing to a switch, Hinohara goes in Arata's place. Hinohara receives Tsukuyo, a Hayagami that Hinohara activated prior to his trial, from Kotoha, an old friend of Arata's. She also offers him the charm Michihi no Tama (), which he uses to speak with Arata. Kikuri, who is barely alive, also communicates with Hinohara via the charm and assigns him the job of bringing peace to Amawakuni. Hinohara manages to get away from Gatoya, acquires allies like Kannagi, and learns how to utilize Tsukuyo. Hinohara discovers Masato Kadowaki, a bully from his past in contemporary Japan, has followed in his footsteps as he put down the other rebels. After taking the place of Harunawa, one of the enigmatic Six Shinsh, Kadowaki activates his own Hayagami, Orochi, and engages Hinohara in a series of combat encounters. Along the process, Hinohara and Kotoha become closer, and their relationship becomes more problematic when Kotoha learns the truth about Hinohara and when he harms her out of control due to his rising power. Arata settles into high school in contemporary Japan and becomes friends with Imina Oribe. The rightful successor is Imina, a member of Kikuri's clan who got lost on Earth fifteen years earlier. Harunawa, posing as Kadowaki, schemes to assassinate Imina and put an end to Kikuri's line. Arata and Imina look to prophecies for guidance on how to thwart the Six Shinsh's desire to rule over Amawakuni and Earth. To increase his dominance, Harunawa infects the city and attacks the school. Imina defends Arata and the Hinohara family by using her Amatsuriki skills, which are specific to women of her line.
