Attacker You!
You (pronounced Yu) Hazuki, a thirteen-year-old junior high school student with ambition and drive, moves to Tokyo from the Japanese countryside where she lived with her grandparents to live with her father Toshihiko, a cameraman who has just returned from Peru, and enrolls at Hikawa Junior High School. Her story is told in Attacker You! Given that she left while You were quite small, Your mother is not visible in the photo. Sunny, her younger adoptive brother that Toshihiko adopted when he was in Peru, also resides with You and her father. Sunny is very close to his stepsister and frequently accompanies her to volleyball games and school. However, You're father doesn't encourage her to play volleyball, and You're perplexed as to why he gets so upset about it. You observes that her father also behaves strangely whenever she watches Kanako Tajima on television or sees a picture of her since she is a fan of Tajima, a volleyball color commentator. You are an avid volleyball player with extraordinary jumping skills who aspires to play for Japan's national women's volleyball team at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. She joins the volleyball squad for girls at Hikawa Junior High. Despite You's inherent talent, her first few months on the team are difficult since she initially has an understanding of the rules and procedures of team play and constantly disagrees with Nami Hayase, the team's star player and captain (after Kuro was forced to step down due to a knee injury). Daimon, her coach, is also harsh to the point of being borderline brutal, acting violently toward his players when they mess up or don't perform to his standards. After one game early in the series, he slaps every girl on the team across the face for allowing the opposing team to score one point (even though they won 15 to 1). But over time, You's self-assurance and positivity help her develop into one of the team's top players. You quickly catches sight of Sho Takiki, the tall, attractive captain of the Hikawa boys' volleyball team. The competition between Nami and You takes on a new dimension as a result of her preference for Sho. The clingy You attends additional training sessions led by Sho in the morning before school simply to be close to him. She even goes so far as to put as much effort into attempting to attract his attention as she does into her game. Over time, Sho starts to develop feelings for You as well, but he ultimately recognizes that athletics are his true passion. Despite this realization, You still hold out hope that she will one day be able to win his heart. A turbulent bond between You and Nami develops over time, and it reaches a boiling point when Nami joins a rival professional squad led by the ruthless Daimon. Additionally, you make friends with Eri Takigawa, a talented attacker who plays for a rival squad called the "Sunlight Players." Eri joins the same professional team after you do.
