Candy Candy
Candy spent her early years there after being adopted by the Pony's Home orphanage near Lake Michigan at the beginning of the 20th century. She would frequently come there for rest and to make decisions about her future. She fled outside crying after Annie, her best friend from the orphanage, was adopted, and she briefly met a boy who advised her not to cry. Candy still had good recollections of the youngster and referred to him as the "Prince on the Hill" despite not knowing his name. Later on, the youngster will have a significant impact on her life. Candy was adopted by the Leagan family when she was 12 years old to be a friend for their daughter Eliza and her brother Neil. The Leagans mistreated Candy and eventually turned her into a maid. Candy was saved from being transferred to Mexico when the Leagan family accused her of stealing and hired her to work on their family farm there by William Ardlay, the only heir to the affluent Ardlay family and proprietor of the Ardlay estate. Until she was an adult, William Ardlay served as Candy's tutor; nevertheless, Candy would not come into contact with him until the conclusion of the novel. Additionally, he was related to the Leagan kids, Anthony Brown's relatives, the Cornwell brothers Archibald (Archie) and Alistair (Stear), and Candy's first love, Anthony Brown. Later, after being thrown off his horse during a hunting mishap, Anthony passed away. After that, Candy was transferred to London with Archie, Stear, and the Leagan kids to attend the elite St. Paul's College, a secondary school. It was there that Candy met Terrence (Terrius/Terry) Granchester, the illegitimate son of a British Duke and American Broadway actress Eleanor Baker. On the same boat she was traveling on from America to London, Candy once witnessed him sobbing. According to articles reportedly published on Kyoko Mizuki's website, the author Keiko Nagita/Kyoko Mizuki said that Terry was her "second and big love that cannot give fruit." When Eliza Leagan plotted to get Candy expelled from St. Paul's by luring them into a scandal, the situation separated the couple. Terry left St. Paul's following the controversy to preserve Candy's reputation and pursue his acting ambitions, but Candy soon made the decision to leave as well. They would both set off on their respective life adventures in the United States, where Terry sought a career as a rising star actor in New York while Candy studied to become a nurse in Chicago during the time of World War I. Susanna, an actress and fellow member of his theater group, started to like Terry. Susanna disabled herself while saving Terry's life during a mishap that happened during a rehearsal. Her acting career was shattered by her injury. Susanna struggled with depression and made an attempt at suicide because she didn't want to bother anyone or destroy her job. Terry felt guilty but was split between seeing Candy again and caring for Susanna. Candy made the decision to put her own happiness before Terry's happiness and left him after she learned what had happened without Terry ever telling her. Terry had already decided to stay with Susanna, and Candy was aware of this because he had never sought Candy's advice before making this choice. Following that, Candy went back to Chicago to carry on with her life. By happenstance, she ended up caring for Albert, who had lost his memories following an Italian rail bombing connected to World War I. During Albert's amnesiac state, Candy and Albert made the decision to live together, and they did so for a number of years. Nevertheless, Albert eventually regained his memory and told Candy who he really was. Candy found out that he was also the Prince on the Hill at the conclusion of the tale. In adulthood, their connection had developed to a new level.
