Numerous guilds exist in the planet of Earth-land, where wizards[b] use their magic to fulfill work requests for money. In quest of his lost adopted father, the dragon Igneel, Natsu Dragneel, a wizard from the Fairy Tail guild who specializes in dragon slaying, travels to the Kingdom of Fiore. He meets Lucy Heartfilia, a young heavenly mage, along the way and asks her to join Fairy Tail. Gray Fullbuster, an ice wizard; Erza Scarlet, a magical knight; Wendy Marvell and Carla, another Dragon Slayer and Exceed pair; and Exceed Happy, a cat-like creature, round out the guild's lineup. Together, the group sets out on a number of missions, including bringing down criminals, unauthorized dark guilds, and ancient Etherious creatures made by Zeref, a magician cursed with immortality and lethal strength. Zeref is discovered by Natsu and his friends living alone on Sirius Island, Fairy Tail's sacred territory, where he confesses a desire to die for the atrocities he has caused. Fairy Tail and the wicked guild Grimoire Heart engage in a struggle over Zeref that draws the notice of the black dragon Acnologia. The defensive Fairy Sphere spell that puts the Fairy Tail wizards into seven years of suspended animation is cast by the ghost of their guild's founder and Zeref's former lover, Mavis Vermillion, helping them survive Acnologia's attack. Later, Fairy Tail engages in combat with Tartaros, a sinister guild of Etherious, in an effort to break the seal on a book that is thought to contain E.N.D., Zeref's supreme demon. Igneel, who had been hidden inside Natsu, emerges to fight Acnologia when he returns to destroy both guilds, only to be slain in front of a defenseless Natsu, who then leaves on a training expedition to exact revenge on Igneel.
