Flanders no Inu
Living in a little village close to Antwerp with his grandfather Jehan, Nello Tarth is an impoverished but content orphan. Nello has a gift for drawing, and he's been fascinated by it ever since he was a young boy and saw one of Rubens' (a well-known artist) images. A working dog named Patrash who has been mistreated and abandoned by his former owner is one of the working dogs Nello one day finds while assisting Jehan with the daily milk delivery to Antwerp. After tending to the worn-out animal, a close bond that is trustworthy grows. Nello's closest friend is Alois Cojez, the daughter of the richest and most powerful person in Blacken Village. Nello must firsthand witness the villagers' illiteracy and brutality when he decides to pursue art. Particularly Alois' father regards him as a lazy who is unable to support himself through his passion for sketching. Nello struggles mightily with his poverty, yet he never loses up on his goal of realizing his dream and earning their respect.
