Technology had reached a point of prosperity for the entire planet in 2045. The World Wide Web has evolved into a home for "App Monsters" (, Apurimonsutzu), or "Appmons," intelligent creatures created specifically for mobile apps. The main character of the series is Haru Shinkai, a typical junior high student. One day he finds an Appmon hiding in his smartphone, which turns out to be Gatchmon, and the two start working together. Haru and Gatchmon team up to stop the artificial intelligence Leviathan from creating viruses that will make all Appmons bad after Haru discovers this information from Gatchmon. As the series goes on, Haru enlists the assistance of the aspiring idol Eri Karan, the well-known AppTuber Torajirou Asuka, the prodigious hacker Rei Katsura, who is looking for his younger brother who was abducted by Leviathan, and Haru's closest friend Yjin Zora. Each of these characters is paired with an Appmon to aid in the battle to defeat Leviathan and restore the balance between their two worlds.
