Legend of Basara
In the post-apocalyptic world of Basara, a line of corrupt and repressive Saffron Clan lords have ruled over Japan. The present one is the Golden Emperor, a ruler who has slaughtered the majority of his children out of an obsession with holding onto power. Later, he gave the remaining children their own provinces so they could reign as minor kings and focus their energy on competing with one another rather than trying to overthrow him. As a result, the majority of Kings abuse the subjects under their control. Although the peasants have been oppressed for years, they nevertheless retain some of their rebellious nature. Four swords—Byakko, Suzaku, Seiry, and Genbu—named after the Ssu Ling gods and fashioned for assassinated rebel leaders two generations ago—serve as the emblems of underground resistance organizations throughout Japan. According to a prophecy, a child of fate who will lead a revolution will be born in Byakko Village, where the sword of Byakko is preserved. The prophet claims that when boy and girl twins are born, one of them will be the child of destiny. The youngster, Tatara, is seen by the villagers as the chosen one, but Sarasa is ultimately in charge. She takes up her brother's name and responsibility to lead her people in revolt after the local tyrant, the Red King, destroys her hamlet and has her brother executed.
