A loose theme that runs throughout the entire series is the "Thriller Restaurant," which is introduced in the first episode. The remaining tales in the anthology are a collection of ghost tales like Kwaidan and the Scary Stories collection. The three "dishes" that make up each episode are the appetizer, the main course, and the dessert. The short story "Appetizer" has a supernatural component, such as ghosts, spirits, or anything comparable. Similar to the appetizer, the "Main Dish" is a longer ghost story with a surprising twist. One of the major characters in Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai tells a ghost story called "The Desert" as they play. These end with a moral lesson and include characters from unrelated series. Starting with episode 13, a fourth narrative replaces the original animation; when the music pauses for these stories, a disturbing visual is shown.
