In the Cosmic Era 0071, the space colony Heliopolis maintains its neutrality in the massive conflict between Coordinators—human beings whose biological features were altered before birth—and Naturals—unaltered individuals who still live on Earth—that is raging throughout the cosmos. The evolved creatures fled into space in search of colonies built by humans because of the Naturals' intense animosity toward the Coordinators. Kira Yamato is a Coordinator and a student at Heliopolis when ZAFT, a military group made up of dissident Coordinators, launches an attack on the colony in an effort to acquire a collection of five cutting-edge mobile battle suits known as Gundams. Kira takes possession of the final Gundam, the Strike, while ZAFT is able to escape with four of the mobile suits. After escaping the conflict, Kira and his college buddies join the Earth Alliance's Archangel crew, where they learn about the horrors of war and the suffering it causes.
