With its storied team, the "Generation of Miracles," Teikou Middle School has dominated the national basketball scene for the past three years. The team was made up of five sports prodigies who thrived, but a "Phantom Sixth Man" lurked in the shadows and contributed to the team's renown. Their gigantic growth eventually drove them away from the sport they adored and forced them to part ways in high school. The Seirin High School basketball team is looking for new players, so Taiga Kagami and Tetsuya Kuroko are recruited. These two freshmen appear to have quite different skill sets. Kagami, who recently returned from the United States, possesses a natural ability and an unwavering passion for the game. Kuroko, on the other hand, lacks presence and doesn't show any exceptional athletic ability. He subsequently turns out to be Teikou's Phantom Sixth Man, a former member of the Generation of Miracles. Kuroko wants to show the Seirin team that he is a powerful individual in his own right. Kuroko, who shares Kagami's commitment, joins forces with him to establish a powerful partnership, offering to serve as Kagami's "shadow" and support his "light." They hope to win the forthcoming Interhigh tournament with the help of their new Seirin comrades, but their strategy is complicated by the appearance of Kuroko's former teammates.
