A disastrous occurrence was predicted to occur long ago in the nine provinces of Kyushu: descending comets would deplete the spiritual forces of the heavens and the earth, ushering in an era of chaos. But in defiance of the prophecy, no catastrophe occurred as the comets passed past. In a rural village in the Sokei region, a boy named Ouriku was born at the same moment, perhaps affected by the phenomena. Twelve years later, when no one remembers what happened, one of the five greatest sects of the nine provinces, the Reikenzan clan, decides to run an examination to find the most gifted people who are qualified to become disciples and eventually sages. When Ouriku and his servant Ouchou learn of this information, they rush to the location without realizing that the organizer, Oubu, is notorious for being incredibly careless and reckless, which makes the examination's difficulties unpredictable.
