Amu Hinamori is a bashful girl who finds it difficult to establish friends, in part because of the misconceptions that have been created about her "cool and spicy" nature at school. Amu wakes up to find three brightly colored and elaborately painted eggs in her bed and wishes she could show everyone her "would-be" self. These "Hearts Eggs" each contain a "Guardian Character," which are embodiments of someone's ideal selves and desires. Amu is now able to communicate her true self thanks to Ran, Miki, and Su. But things don't always work out for her. The Seiyo Elementary Guardians, a group resembling a student council with each member holding their own Guardian Character, get interested in Amu as a result of the sudden appearance of her Guardian Characters. Amu, who can play numerous characters, is forced to serve as the Guardians' "Joker" and assist them in locating X Eggs, which are tainted replicas of one's Hearts Egg. Amu learns more about these enigmatic Characters, the X Eggs, and the group that appears to be at the core of it all as she becomes enmeshed in the Guardians' quest.
