The Score, a collection of historical prophesies that determine the course of the planet, binds the globe of Auldrant. Everyone abides by it as an unchangeable destiny, including those whose deeds result in suffering and bloodshed. The nation of Kimlasca-Lanvaldear and the Malkuth Empire engage in a war using magical skills referred to as the Fonic Arts in an effort to realize the paradise predicted by the Score. Luke von Fabre, who was abducted as a youngster and lost all memory of his past, is the main character of Tales of the Abyss. He spends his days sequestered in his mansion. One day, while practicing his swordsmanship, Tear, a lady, tries to kill his instructor. Luke stands up for him, but the fight sends the two teleporting to another location. The return trip of Luke and Tear gradually develops into a quest that will either release the planet from the grip of the Score or entirely destroy it.
