High school teacher Nozomu Itoshiki has such a negative outlook on life that even the tiniest setback can send him spiraling into an uncontrollable state of despair. Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei is a modern-day satirical slice-of-life comedy that explores various facets of Japanese life and culture through Nozomu's interactions with his students: Kiri Komori, a recluse who won't leave the school; Abiru Kobushi, a mysterious figure who frequently shows up to class with severe and enigmatic injuries; the overly optimistic Kafuuka Fuura, who is Nozomu's
