Mountain climbers Gorou Saruwatari and Jack "Lostman" Woodbridge have scaled some of the world's tallest peaks. They are inspired to travel to space after seeing the International Space Station from the summit of Mount Everest. The "Nexus" program of the International Space Association (ISA) is launched at the same time in order to investigate and acquire Helium-3, a new energy source found on the moon. Gorou and Lostman make separate attempts to get into the program: Lostman enlists as a pilot in the military, while Gorou works as a construction worker.
